Waving a Prayer Flag

Good Monday morning....Welcome to More Stars in Comanche !
I am so pleased to be part of this hop...
and, with the added bonus of Thearica and Madame Samm cheering all of us on.......
How much more fun could it GET ?
Plus, I was one of the lucky recipients of a flag pole!
Mine was a  Star.......How perfect is that !
Thank you Flag-Outlet, because of your help, my flag is waving in the wind with style

I did a lot of thinking about what kind of flag I could make to represent who Vickie is.....
let's see....it could have been a rooster for sure,
or Corgi's, cattle, gardening, sewing, and stars would all fit, but not this time.
 Prayer came to mind.
I've been praying for someone whose been going through a tough time lately,
I thought she could use a special little pick-me-up.
As long as I can remember she's played the piano, sung in church and in cantata's.
For many years I stood behind her watching her hands move across the keys of an old upright piano while words of God's love were embedded in my heart from the old time hymns she sang.

This rose is from an old dresser scarf I embroidered when I was a kid....
A time when dresser scarfs were a must ! LOL
The single red rose just seemed like it needed to be there.

I practiced free motion cursive writing with my sewing machine until I thought it looked pretty good !
YES.... Writing with thread !..... You should try it ! .....It's fun !
I wrote music scriptures from Psalms all over a quilt sandwich, then cut the heart out of it. The hearts are perfect because I sure do love this special lady and she's had a lot to do with shaping me into the person I am.  This flag is about her, but it's also about who I am.....because when God lays someone on my heart....I'm gonna pray for them !
There's several other people on my heart, they'll get a prayer flags too,
then, when I'm finished with those......my flag pole will get a flag with a Star on it.
Prayin and sewin....that's me !
Thank you for stopping by to have a look... Now please go visit the other ladies who are waving their flags with me today.

Vickie, your prayer flag really touched me. Your admiration for all this lady has done for you is epitomized in this flag. Oh, I remember when dresser scarves were a must. I don't think I could even find one in my house. I do have an old bath towel under a old tv in my bedroom to keep it from scaring the top of my chest of drawers - does that count as a make-shift dresser scarf? Oh, the images of dresser scarves immediately went flying through my head. My mom had so many that I don't even remember seeing her make any, ever! Your cursive writing is amazing. I do have an alphabet card with my machine and I would have used it instead of trying cursive writing - you did a phenomenal job! I adore you flag and your tribute. I always am elated to see your project and you certainly delivered on this one. BTW - my son-in-law was NOT offered a job in Dallas. The lady called and told him why they selected a different candidate and told him if the other one does not work out, they may very well be calling him and if they expand, he may still be considered. She offered to help him any way she can. My daughter has a great attitude and says it will happen when the time is right. I tell her that he needs to finish his PhD - dissertation, too before they leave Albuquerque. So, as much as I want them in Dallas, I don't think the time is right YET!

Your flag is so lovely and I enjoyed very much the story behind it. We don´t have the customs in Sweden to put flags in our gardens, but I think it is a wonderful idea. Maybe our climate could be too hard to the flags.
Thank you for sharing your creativity and being part of this hop.

What a lovely gesture, what a great idea. I have read studies that show prayer and positive though about another person can influence the speed of recovery from illnesses. I know a lot of knitters who enjoy making prayer shawls and I think a prayer flag is the perfect thing for quilters of the same mind. I think what I like best is the how the rose adds to the whole flag. It not only adds color, it denotes love and caring. On top of that, it came from a childhood treasure of your own making.

JanesQuilting said...

That is beautiful! I didn't ski the red rose till I read down your post. Oh, how sweet it is. I love the fabric and you showed it off beautifully!

Carol said...

I remember always having to have a dresser scarf...too funny! It's sweet that you recycled into such a lovely and beautiful gift for your friend. Your flag and words of encouragement are just perfect!

LJ said...

Wow! Isn't this flag a beauty! I love things black and white and the red rose was perfect. Your cursive quilting was amazing; I've been trying to do straight lines (free hand) so know how difficult the writing must be. Your friend is getting not only a gorgeous flag but think of all the prayers that you sewed into it. Blessings to you also.

Vickie, what an awesome idea...a Prayer Flag!!! I HAVE to steal/use your idea. The flag is very special and I can only imagine how treasured it will be by your friend in Christ!!! I'm inspired!! The Old Hymns are Forever, aren't they? I like some of the newer music and Praise choruses but Nothing matches the strength of Faith in the words written by the great men/women in the Faith!!

What a beautiful, beautiful, and thoughtful gift to give to a friend in need of comfort. From the way you describe her, you've done a great job in capturing her spirit. I love that the giant keyboard is so visible from a distance and yet the other sentiments require that one get good and close and intimate with this prayer flag -- the way it should be read.

Beautiful musical flag! Adding the embroidered rose was a lovely sentimental idea. What a great way to show love and support for your friend.

Your piano keys are really neat, I like how you made them. And great job with the cursive sewing! I'm having a heck of a time getting my sewing machine to cooperate with my FMQ, but I think I just need more practice. Thank you for sharing!

Beautiful flag and it looks great on the star flag holder. What a lovely way to honor a friend anytime but especially during a time of need. The cursive writing is really nice and I wouldn't have thought it possible with a sewing machine. Love sewn into a quilt.
