She Who Sews

Update : February7,2014 ~ I'm linking this post up with

I have to start this by telling you how much I adore this fabric !
I ordered mine on line. When it got here, the more I looked at it, the more I liked  it !
OK....So, It's here....I like it....now....what in the world am I going to make with it ?

It has to be something for my sewing room.....but, what do I need ?
A pin cushion ?....no, that's not grand enough....
A pillow ?....Don't need one in here.
What's the most important thing in this room ?.... My new Janome sewing machine of course !
What does it need ?....A cover ?....no, that would probably be thrown in the corner most of the time.
What I need, is to know what all those fancy stitches on that thing will look like when I use them.
A BOOK OF STITCHES !....That's what I'll make ! Oh, wait a minute....they call those kind of books....gulp....bibles, stitch bibles. I don't think I could call it that.... a Bible is God's Sacred Word.

Over the next few days as I worked on the pages of different stitches, (which are on Kona solids),
I pondered over those two words....book or bible.
I decided, why not just ask God what he thought about calling it a stitch bible. So I did !
A few days later it was time to make the first cuts in the Handmaids fabric. As I began to cut, it was like my eyes were suddenly opened....for the first time since the fabric arrived I began to see the word God printed on the fabric......and then scripture started popping out at me.......Colossians 2:2, Philippians 3:14 and II Corinthians 9:6 ! Yes, God had answered my question.

It's important that I have a book to show me what the stitches will look like when I adjust the width and length on my sewing machine. God's Word tells me how to have a relationship with Him, through important correction and instruction and tells me of the width and length of the love that Jesus Christ has for each one of us.   I will think about God every time I use my stitch bible and it'll serve as a reminder that
God answers questions, all I needed to do was ask Him.

My stitch bible is machine quilted, hand embroidered, appliqued and embellished.
I used rat-tail cord to bind the edges.... and grommets and rings to make the pages easy to turn.
Can you tell which buttons are real ?
This picture gives you some idea of how much quilting there is on every page.
I made the stitch pages first, then when I appliqued and decorated the Handmaids fabric I referred back to those pages of stitches time and again. So this stitch bible is handy and necessary in my sewing room.
It's one of those kind of things you just want to hold and pet. (quilters will know what I mean by that )
Sew Who Sews is Me Who Sews !
I chose the lady on the fabric panel that I thought looked the most like me....Now stop that laughing !

The numbers at the top of each page, collate with the numbers on my machine and the numbers in the middle of the pages are the stitch length or width.

The needle in the pin cushion is something I got from Shelly's buttons and more.
You may have to click the picture to see it better.
I thought this page was a pretty good representation of how my mind works. The cogs of my mind are always turning, the sewing machine up there represents what I think about...probably too much....
and the stars are More Stars in Comanche.
I quilted a square inside one of the circles and added some loose cords....draw your own conclusion !

The hands remind me of the nail holes in Jesus hands. I had that charm, a cross with a heart in it.
It's put on with a cord of red thread.
This is to remind me of the blood Jesus shed because he loved me enough to die on the cross for my sin.

Here is a list of the talented people that are sharing this day with me !

there ever was !

Thank you to the lovely
 Amanda Murphy,
along with Robert Kaufman,
and Aurifil for their sponsorship !
The inspiration for my Kona project came from pg.128 of Amanda Murphy's book, Color Essentials.
Her book is filled with quilt, place-mat and pillow patterns she createusing
Sunrise and Sunset bundles from Robert Kaufman.

        Presenting my version of

Made the Comanche way, and photographed in the cattle's elephant's hay !
A Kona Sunrise fat quarter bundle with a Kona Black background were my fabric choices.
Black pops yummy colors like Bubble Gum, Cactus, Sour Apple, Corn Yellow and Candy Pink.
For the piecing AND quilting I used luscious Aurifil thread.
Choosing to make Amanda's "Circus" pattern was a no-brainer for me...
because I love to sew Flying Geese and she made them my favorite way.

Yes, I too, was like so many of you..........I said, "What, a completely solid quilt !"
NO WAY !   It's not possible !   I can't.....don't make me !
I've use Kona solids in my quilts for several years, because the fabric is so easy to work with and there are so many vibrant colors to choose from. But, I've never made an all solids quilt in my life !
~ However ~
I was so very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed working with all solid fabrics.
I have become a solids kind of girl !

OH ! WAIT !

This little KONA Birdie....
(I know, it's not a rooster, but it has WINGS )
told me there is to be a GIVEAWAY !
I'll tell you about it in a sec
This is another Kona solids quilt I made for my Mother.
She loves flowers and birds and she always had plenty of seed, water and shelter for them.
The word was, the birds knew to go to Helen's House
She used to sit on her deck for hours watching the birds in her gardens.
My sweet Mama doesn't get around as good as she used to, as she is 80+9 & 1/2 years old.
A lady never says her complete age you know !
Now she'll have this quilt to look at when she can't make it outside.
" Mom's Birds and Blooms "

I used a tutorial from Laura Wasilowski that she did for "The Quilt Show" classroom.
It's raw edge appliqued, machine and hand embroidered, and machine quilted.

OK, NOW....
So, if you  don't have extra Kona solids to giveaway...what's the next best thing ?

Day #5 of the Black Tie Boogie

Welcome

Today is my day to show you what I made for the BTB hop
and the chicks below are who I get to cluck with today !

November 25

I made a couple of quilts for this hop,  the first one is
 "Hole in the Chicken Wire"

I took it outside to show my rooster critic....Fonzie.
He inspected it very closely.
Rooster on the left...

 Rooster in the middle....

 Rooster on the right !

Flapping his wings.... his way of clapping his approval !
Thearica of Pig Tales and Quilts and I are huge fans of Florine Johnson's Radical Roosters, so we  decided we would make similar quilts for this hop. Hers would be albino roosters on black fabric and mine would be black roosters on white. We used Florines patterns and incorporated the Hole in the Barn Door quilt pattern into it, but the design would be an individual choice . I collected white on black fabrics for several months.
(Notice the chicken feet quilted on the borders,TOO CUTE!)

Each piece is raw edge appliqued.
There's 28 pieces in this one called Rowdy !
I think he looks like he's running for the hole in the chicken wire.
Some chickens are escape artists and can squeeze through a very small hole !

This is the picture of Fonzie
I'm partial to this guy, so I made a fabric portrait of him !

"The Other Fonzie" also raw edge applique.
I tried a new to me way to bind this one....rattail binding, I learned how by watching this video by Carol Ann Waugh

The Other Fonzie might have some admirers!

Have a great day and God bless you.
